Book Review – Goandria: The Schism Part I

Goandria: The Schism Part I by R. Michael

Amazon Book Description:

In this prequel to an upcoming novel, Goandria lies under the cruel rule of worlox demons. Emerging from an unknown realm, they claim large swaths of the northern territories for their own. The wizards, blessed with power from Voshnore, continue their fight against them with little success. Pushed back to the south, generation to generation, year by year, they labor in vain. Until now.

Lorkai, general of the wizard army, returns home after years of fighting. He brings long awaited successes on the battlefield. Yet those successes come with prices of their own. Several of Lorkai’s men now anguish in worlox occupied areas. Following a warm welcome, Lorkai’s request for aid is refused. Lorkai and his best friend, Evera, take matters into their own hands. The wizards uncover secrets about the worlox, which leads the friends to fight for their lives, and their humanity.

This short story paints an interesting backdrop for an upcoming novel.

Plot – Grade A-

For a short story, there’s limitations in certain areas of the plot but in Goandria the plot fits well into the pages used and doesn’t come away with a choppy feeling. However, I did have some difficulty with the middle of the story on the chapters focusing on Lorkai and Evera since my attention wasn’t snared by them as much as it was by the subplot with the worlox demons. Lorkai was a difficult character for me to understand even though he is one of the focuses of the story. I had difficulty empathizing him even though I felt that was what was intended and there was a tad too much whining going on for a famed, battle-hardened general once we got about halfway through the story for my taste. That said, this prequel is meant to provide some important background information for Michael’s upcoming novel and it achieves its mission. There were some areas where I wish a little more information had been shared, especially Evera and Lorkai’s relationship, but overall this short story stands well on its own even as it opens the door to further adventures.

Content – Grade A

This is a clean novel. While it deals with warfare and the requisite violence, injuries, and death, there is nothing gratuitous in how this is handled. There are serious injuries and references to horrible conditions in prisons but nothing that I would consider inappropriate for the intended audience of teens and young adults.

There is no language and no sensuality is present in this book. While this is a dark fantasy that deals with demons, it was not completely without hope. Most of the spiritual content in this prequel comes up with the Worlox and their fear of being returned to their prison and their attempt to usurp the wizards and Voshnore. The wizards’ magic comes from Voshnore and the reason for limits on their power is discussed. However, I would hope that more time is spent on the spirituality of this world in general and Voshnore in particular in the upcoming novel of the series so readers can come away with a better understanding of how this fantasy world works.

Technical – Grade B-

I have to admit I was torn over this grade because on the one hand R. Michael writes very beautiful descriptive scenes. The opening scene was gorgeous and truly painted a picture and this happens almost every time Michael has a descriptive passage. On the other hand, there were enough technical issues that the grade had to come down. First, there a few homonym typos, such as “aide” when “aid” is what was meant based on context and “steeling” when it should be “stealing.” These didn’t happen often though.

Second, the characters’ thoughts were put in quotations and this just drove me nuts especially when Lorkai and Evera are in the same scene together and they had just been talking to each other but suddenly I see “talking” that is really thinking. This confusion on the reader’s part is one of the reasons that using quotes to delineate thoughts, even internal dialogue, is generally ruled a no-no in writing. Because it’s a short read, this wasn’t as much as a problem as it would be in a full-length novel but I do hope that in the future R. Michael swaps to italics when delineating thoughts.

Third, while Michael writes beautiful descriptions/narrative, the dialogue did not flow as well as it could have. This story is set in a medieval-esque fantasy world but there were far too many modern sayings and words being used and they do pull me out of the setting. “Yeah” and “okay” are constantly showing up and there were a number of small phrases that would fit more with a modern-day setting than the chosen medieval fantasy setting. The dialogue tags were perfunctory but occasionally awkward, which did clash with the beautiful narrative descriptions.

Final Grade – B or 4 Stars

Overall, I thought this story showed the great potential of this new author. For his first book, he creates a decent snapshot into the backstory of his series. There are some technical difficulties as far as anachronistic dialogue and the thoughts being delineated with quotes instead of italics. But, overall, I can see R. Michael’s potential to write some beautiful epic fantasy. His description and narrative is simply gorgeous and I feel confident that he can bring his dialogue up to that same level. I recommend this book for lovers of epic fantasy. Recommended for ages 13 and up.

Welcome to Goandria! – Guest Post by R. Michael

Welcome to Goandria!

Gray and black clouds marched across the once-blue sky. The wind stripped many of the trees of their orange and red foliage. Before long, the darkened sky flashed with bolts of lighting, and thunder rolled in the distance like ominous war drums. A sea of hardwood trees swayed as far as the eye could see in every direction, but in the center of a clearing rose two towers.

The towers were tall, and their walls blazed white, even amongst the coming darkness. The polished stone flawlessly highlighted the craftsmanship of their architect. Each tower looked as if it was carved out of a single piece of stone. Compounding this illusion, no windows were set in the stonework, for their inhabitants did not require any such hindrances to the structures’ beauty. They were pyramidal in shape but elongated so they appeared stretched upward. They were joined by a bridge near the top of the towers which was accented by a series of flying buttresses. Statues of warriors lined the outside of the structures as well as several walkways that merged into a single road that was the only way in or out of the towers.

Along the stone road, a chocolate-brown horse bore its blue-cloaked rider. Two score similarly-clad individuals came out to greet the rider. The horseman threw back his hood, revealing a pronounced jaw and brow bone, long, brown hair, and a short beard that covered his face and neck. He stood taller than his peers, a little over six feet, and his entire frame was reinforced by bulging muscles. Beneath his cloak, he wore a steel breastplate with chainmail sleeves and a bronze-hilted, hand-and-a-half sword hung at his belt.

Goandria: The Schism introduces a storyline that has been in the works for nearly a decade and a half. This novel will give readers the first glimpse into a larger fantasy world that will unfold as the series continues.

The Schism sets up events for the next book, Goandria: Visions of War, and serves as a prequel to the entire series. It was a storyline I did not intend to release or write anytime soon, but as I started to near the end of my first manuscript, I began to realize how important The Schism storyline was. I also wanted to avoid continuity errors that commonly happen when releasing prequels after the main story.

What happens in Goandria: The Schism? Long ago, the worlox demons emerged from their prison and set themselves up as Lords over the world. The people were persecuted and oppressed, nearly to extinction. The only force that stood in the way of total worlox domination was the wizard order. The wizards, tasked with the protection of Goandria, had been locked in a stalemate with the worlox for generations until the events in this book unfolded.

I wish to deliver to the reader an Epic Fantasy tale that is very character driven. I hope that my audience can laugh and cry with the two main protagonists, Lorkai and Evera, as they push forward in their war against the worlox. This is only the beginning, so stay with the characters as their lives take unexpected turns.

Character Interview with Dentin from Honor

Today I’m very pleased to be part of the book launch blog tour for Rachel Rossano’s newest book, Honor, which was released on the 23rd. I have had the pleasure of already reading this book and so I am very happy to introduce you all to Dentin, the hero of Honor.

Welcome, Dentin. Why don’t you tell us a little about yourself?

As fifteenth Earl of Dentin, I come from an ancient and well established family. I currently serve as Securer of the Realm, a position which consumes most of my time and effort. I was born a second son of three. But then, I lost my father in a hunting accident, and my older brother to the whims of a tyrannical king. My youngest brother still lives, I hope, but he fled into exile beyond Rhynan’s borders over a decade ago. Someday I hope to reunite with him, but for now I endeavor to prevent abuse of power like that which destroyed my family.

It’s said that you excel at being the Securer of the Realm. What exactly does that title mean? What do you do?

My reputation precedes me most places. As Securer of the Realm, I am responsible for seeking out corruption, sedition, and unrest and resolve the issues before they cause great harm to the nation. I am commander of the military, investigator of crimes, and bringer of justice. I endeavor to abide by the law in all I do, but my manner is often too direct for peoples’ sensibilities. There are those, many in fact, who don’t appreciate the interference in their lives that my position requires.

Can you tell us a little about Lady Elsa Reeve? What makes her stand out from the other women you know?

Most women find me rude or offensive. From the start, Elsa didn’t seem to be bothered by my bluntness. On the other hand, she was offended by my mission, my efforts to question her about her business with Merrill, and the fact I wouldn’t leave her alone. She stood her ground even when I backed her into a corner. I admire a woman willing to fight for what is right, even if she is as stubborn as she is lovely.

Her dark eyes don’t miss much for all their beauty. Despite her diminutive size, I would wager she would best any man she opposes. She wouldn’t overcome her opponent with physical prowess or manipulation, which is the tool of most of the women I have met. Instead, her quick mind and gentle heart would win most any day.

Though, I might be a biased witness.

Your story, Honor, is the sequel to Duty. Will we be seeing any familiar faces?

Part of Honor occurs in the home of my semi-nemesis, Sir Rathenridge. As I assume you recall, he and I nearly came to blows in Duty. The fact I am inserting myself into a wedding celebration is bound to cause some new fiction between us. Thankfully Tomas is also there with his lovely wife, Brielle, and their children. In fact there are a great many children running about in the beginning of the book. There are a few other familiar faces that appear and a whole host of new characters.

What do you think will surprise us the most about your story?

I am not as much of a jerk as I seem on the surface.

Lady Elsa Reeve attempts to avoid the marriage of convenience her brother and mother demand of her. She understands the need to pay off her brother’s massive debt. She only wants her family to consider her wishes in the process.

As Elsa becomes further entangled in a snare of her brother’s creating, only one man defends her. But can she trust Dentin, her unlikely champion, and his motives? Book Launch Tour – Thaw – DIY Wolf Fight

Book Launch Tour – Thaw – Part Two of Two

I am a huge fan of stories that retell classic fairy tales, especially when they incorporate elements that remain true to the source material while still being creatively original. E. Kaiser Writes has done this with her new series Thaw and today she is sharing a little more about the real life inspiration for the wolf fight in Prince of Demargen, the third installment in her series.

Thaw 3 BooksJan

What about the wolf fight? I’ve heard that is uniquely realistic, and inspired from experience?

Yes! That one makes me laugh, because of the story behind it. I wrote that scene in Prince of Demargen where the timber wolves play a pivotal role and it was one of the most intense scenes for me to write, (among many, because with this story I just didn’t include a scene unless it sucker-punched me a little some way or another.) But this wolf fight scene especially plays against the backdrop of some of childhood’s integral fears: the night, the snow flurries, nobody can see: and then there’s these wolves stalking the characters. In the back of these characters minds they fundamentally know that the pack is really after their horses, (in real life, wolves will go for horse meat above most other domestic animals) but these predators will take anybody they can get, of course. And the people aren’t going to abandon their horses in mountain forest; so the one character rushes out to bring the fight to them, and ends up in a dagger-vs-fang fight. Knock down drag out, very rough and tumble as you might expect, going hand to hand with a wild animal.  I wrote that as authentically as I could and then when I later received that piece back from my editor she commented that it felt so real. She said, and I quote: “Wow. This is so thrillingly scary. How did you imagine what a wolf fight would be like???!!”

Check out Prince of Demargen’s pinterest board for some scary wolf fight pictures!

It’d been some time since I’d written the scene, and so I had to think about it for a moment. And then I just laughed, because I could link that the memory of writing that scene directly with the memory of a certain dog I had as a teen. He was a magnificent animal, I’ve rarely seen anything more athletic than he was. He was a Karelian Bear Dog, so for anyone who knows that breed they’ll immediately understand. I raised him from a pup and worked hard to train him… he was incredibly smart but one of the most arrogant dogs I’ve ever experienced. He was just an “untamed spirit” kind of thing, and although he loved me, he didn’t want to do what he didn’t want to do. No matter how much I wanted him to do it!   And worming him was something he flat out didn’t want to participate in. I would literally have to wrestle him to the ground and fight with him physically until he finally surrendered enough to take his wormer and swallow it. After the first few times I left the wormer with a sibling, and got the wrestling fight over with first. He knew exactly what was about to happen so we’d roll all over the yard and he’d resist until he finally gave up. Then I’d get the wormer handed to me and then we’d have a few more struggles, and then I’d get him to swallow it.  All the other dogs took it fine. They didn’t like it, but it was just something you swallowed and then you were done with. But with him, it was always a point. Never ever just said “Okay, fine” from the get go. Always was a “I refuse!” tussle.   This was an extremely exhausting process for me, and I always emerged totally played out… we came to respect each other deeply, that dog and I, for he knew that I would refuse to give up longer than he would and so I always got the ‘last word in’ so to speak.  And I was really the only one he’d listen to, because I had proven to him that I wouldn’t give up, and so in most other things he’d do what I said. I never underestimated him; he wasn’t “obeying me”… he was just “siding with me”.   He was an amazing dog and an amazing experience, and I truly believe that any wolf would be fairly similar to what he presented. Possibly less ahtletic, ’cause that dog was super-powered and like a canine version of Spiderman. From what I’ve seen of wolves they are looser jointed, and so would be slightly less “quick twitch” muscle… but then dealing with a wild animal attacking would color the situation a little differently as well.   But I think the situation, while fictional of course, is feasible: wolves attack by slash and run, they don’t “close” with their prey (the way a bull dog is famous for, never letting go) So once you did close with them, they’d be pretty uncomfortable, and mostly trying to get some distance, while of course trying to slash with their fangs as they did it.  If you were able to get their head unable to reach you well, then you could conceivably defeat a wolf with only a dagger… so long as you weren’t worried about getting hurt yourself. You’d have to be all in, totally invested in the fight, or else you’d pull back and it’d surely escape you.

Book Launch Tour – Thaw – Ice Maidens in Real Life

Book Launch Tour – Thaw – Part One of Two

I am a huge fan of stories that retell classic fairy tales, especially when they incorporate elements that remain true to the source material while still being creatively original. E. Kaiser Writes has done this with her new series Thaw and today she is sharing a little more about the series and how ice maidens can exist in real life.

Thaw 3 BooksJan

Ice Maidens in Real Life

Okay! Yes! This is a subject that is very close to home for me, and one of the driving reasons why I couldn’t stop writing this new series even though I had lots of WIPs I was intending for work on. I’ve been really blown away with how much this has resonated with others, too, during this tour, and it’s the top asked question. I think that stories can be such powerful ways of identifying and addressing a truth that we have in our own lives, and they can really make a difference in how we’re able to handle problems in real life.
As I’ve said before, part of maturity of every kind is separating actions from feelings. Different personalities of course process life differently, but while some just keep reacting to everything they feel, others of us try to keep from reacting by quitting feeling.
I know this somewhat from personal experience, I was the kind of middle child that clammed up. The worse things got the further I retreated inside, telling myself that things couldn’t hurt me if I could just stop feeling them.
We show our greatest power when on a peak of emotion, and as kids that’s often when we behave the very worst. So not having the emotion seems like a good solution to some of us.
Which of course can only lead to problems.
Ilise is a special gift a la the Snow Maiden; when her barren parents build a baby out of snow, Thaw Ilise Head promo 2their many years of prayers are answered and they are given the child they have so long yearned for. But with her special origins comes the ability to freeze, (opposite the Snow Maiden tales, in which the poor child always melted away) Her parents have no idea how to deal with that; and soon all three of them are freaked out about her future and what her strange-ness could possibly end up in.  Thinking that she can use her strength to shut down her emotions, she goes about doing so; but emotions are not the problem. They are with us always.
Not being able to disconnect feeling from acting is the problem; and this is a lesson that Ilise takes a while to learn.
I wish someone would have told me about this as a child, it could have saved me a lot of anguish in my youth; where I struggled with black depression that I felt guilty for even feeling. For although we can choose to refuse joy, sorrow is not negotiable. It took me many years and some very highly educational books before I realized that we needed to always welcome joy in all its forms; for it was the raft to help us through the sad parts of life.
Becoming an “ice maiden”, a “cool cucumber”, or whatever other name there is for it, is an easy choice. It feels like you’re really getting somewhere… that you are truly protecting yourself from the sharp stings of everything around you. But it doesn’t. And it can lock you away in a place where you aren’t sure how to escape, and then all you have is the sorrowful parts of the world to keep you company… all of your days.
Those of us who have slipped down this path need to take heart, because we can reverse this process. We can “learn how to melt”… and for the most part, the damage we might have done in our pursuit of this goal is generally minor. Most of it is done to ourselves… and if we can stop gnawing on the past, assess the future realistically, but with hope, and then step out with determination, we can break the icy chains and open up to the happy side of life.
In some seasons there may not be much happiness around, but if we can just take each moment mindfully, there are little things in every path. We just have to be more open to noticing them and taking them into our hearts.
Gratitude is a huge part of this, as well; and there are a ton of “happiness experts” that extoll the virtues of simply being grateful. This is true, and can help a lot.
But most importantly we have to take that first step; quit keeping our hearts on ice, and quit “freezing” the people who are close to us, because it only makes ourselves chillier than before.

I feel like Disney has dominated the fairytale area with the message of “Do whatever you feel like”, but that is a detrimental message. Often we feel like doing very unkind things, if not sometimes downright bad. The Lord’s perspective isn’t “follow your heart”, it is “guard your heart”.
In the end we all feel bad impulses, but it is our actions that determine who we really are. By separating what we do from the way we feel at that moment, we can win out over our worser impulses, and become better, stronger people.

Characters all throughout this series find themselves in various fairytale situations, but instead of being hopeless, (which our girls in the first 2 Thaw books are unwisely tempted to do,) our characters learn that by sticking it out, and refusing to give up, triumph can be achieved. That good will win over evil every time. Even when it seems impossible.
Because, that’s what fairy-tales, (when properly told,) can do best!

The Thaw books are by no means allegorical or doctrinally-charged… but they are written from a deep perspective of hope in the Eternal, and so everything in them is laced with that; instead of the sometimes rather “dark art-y” view a lot of modern day fantasy has developed into.
In this way, I hope young and old alike can enjoy a fantasy world underpinned with wholesome morals, and maybe some of them can be encouraged to keep fighting the good fight within themselves as well.

Character Interview with Ireic from The King of Anavrea

BlogTourButton

Today I’m happy to be a part of the blog tour for Rachel Rossano’s newest book, The King of Anavrea. I always enjoy reading character interviews because it lets me get a feel for the characters before I read their story and sometimes the interviews compel me to move their story from “maybe” to “must have now!” 🙂 So I’m very excited to introduce Ireic.

Welcome, Ireic. Can you give us a little background about yourself for those who have not read your brother’s story?

I am Ireic Theodoric, King of Anavrea. My older half-brother, Trahern, was removed from the line to the throne by my father shortly before father died, making me heir. I tried to convince Trahern to take the crown, but he refused. I can’t say I blame him.

You were a reluctant Crown Prince in The Crown of Anavrea and now you are a reluctant king. Can you tell us some of the ways you have grown to accept this burden of leadership?

I am a military man. From a young age I trained with the army. Leading campaigns, marching, taking and giving orders, and the structure of the military life was a far cry from politics and governing a nation. Politicians don’t take orders well. Thankfully Trahern has made himself available to teach me how to manage them. However, even though I am learning the right strategies, I struggle not to give into the impulse to be more direct. Reason and logic seem like superior tactics compared to lies and fancy speeches. It will become second nature someday, I suppose. Someone has to rule.

Can you tell us a little about your bride? What makes your relationship a challenge? How does she surprise you?

Lirth Parnan is the only daughter of the King of Sardmara. I signed a treaty with her father that included our marriage as a show of good faith. Only after I signed did I learn that she had spent the previous five years in captivity. When I rescued her, I discovered further reason to regret my new alliance. You see, Lirth is blind. I don’t mind so much as my advising council does. They have a problem with anyone with imperfections being part of Anavrean nobility. They take great exception to Trahern’s wife because she was a slave before he married her. Imagine what they had to say about Lirth.

Other than my problems with the council, the relationship aspect of marriage hasn’t been too challenging. Lirth is a beautiful woman. She constantly surprises me with her strength and grace. For a woman who cannot see, she is very perceptive. She does suffer from nightmares. Remnant memories of her kidnapping will wake her in the middle of the night frequently. Also, she is a follower of a god she refers to as the Kurios. I have been in contact with an esteemed teacher of the Kurios’ way. He sent me a book to read. I am hoping it will give me further insight into my wife’s faith. Her belief in this being seems to be the only thing holding her together at times. One can’t help admiring something that powerful. I need all the help I can get at this point.

In The Crown of Anavrea, we learned that you and your brother did not have a close relationship growing up due to familial tension. Will we be seeing Trahern again?

Yes, I am sure you will. We spent a great deal of time together before he gave me his final answer about whether or not he would take the throne. We found we liked each other. I am a frequent guest at their home just over the border in Braulyn, much to my personal guard’s chagrin. Despite refusing the crown, Trahern remains supportive of my efforts to rule well. He knows I need help. I foster hope that our children will be able to grow up together, reclaiming a bit of what was lost during our childhood.

Can you give us any hints on what might surprise us the most about your story?

I am not sure. Many parts of my own story surprise me. I am king, aren’t I? I am a bit concerned about the rebellion part of the tagline. I can’t see how that is going to resolve into a happy ending.

A reluctant king, a blind queen, and a marriage that sparked a rebellion…

Ireic Theodoric, King of Anavrea, constantly battles with his council over who will run the country. When the council insists on a treaty with Sardmara, he agrees. However, the treaty quickly becomes an arranged marriage. Ireic offers up himself for the sake of Anavrea. But after he signs, no princess appears.

Lirth Parnan, only daughter of the king of Sardmara, survives alone in a cold, damp tower room. Baron Tor kidnapped her in an attempt to control her father. No one came to claim her. She suspects her father considers her flawed beyond use in his political games. After five years of waiting, her hope of rescue wanes with her health.

After Ireic fights his way into Lirth’s tower, he realizes the depths of her father’s deception. Instead of being an answer to his problems, Lirth creates new ones. The council will not accept her as queen, but Ireic has sworn an oath that he will marry her. His choice could cost him his throne, perhaps his life.
